What does this mean for you? It is projected that investments into solar, wind, and biofuels will grow to $343 billion within the next decade. For comparsion, 2008 saw $125 billion invested and 2009 saw $145 billion invested. Almost every single company and corportation are making some sort of investment in supporting energy projects. - When I was a young buck, I don't ever remember hearing anything being referred to as "green" unless it physically appeared to be the color green. Today, everywhere I go, I see "green" this and "green" that and most of these things are in fact an assortment colors that are not green. It is hard to go a day without seeing something urging you to eat organically grown, natural food. People making a fuss about drinking out of plastic bottles. Cars with names like "Volt" and "Leaf". Best Buy has containers upon entering their building that asks you to dump your cell phones, batteries, printer ink cartridges. Seemingly every company you can think of now brags about how "green" they are.
What caused these changes in attitude towards sustainability and conservation? More and more people are realizing that our attitudes and practices in terms of consumerism and sustainability will not last much longer. Eventually, we will use, get rid of, then buy the updated product until our planet cannot sustain the rate withdrawal of resources required to produce the products and the waste generated from disposing of them.
President Obama, when running for office, promised to reduce the nation's dependence on nonrenewable sources of energy and fight climate change. The launch of his "New Energy for America" program had several objectives including: - Charting a new energy future that includes alternative and renewable energy that will create millions of new jobs that cannot be shipped overseas.
- Invest in clean, renewable energy to achieve the goal of generating 25% of our energy from renewable resources by 2025. These investments include solar, wind, biofuels, and geothermal power.
- Fight climate change by investing in energy efficiency and conservation.
